Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to avoid them. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nourishing and good for you. A number of foods really do boost your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are great at battling depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Consume an egg and feel better!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.
If you want to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.
Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. Feeling starved can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood too!
You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try some of these instead!
